N46bn nine-storey secretariat won’t be abandoned—Bayelsa gov

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has pledged “to complete the N46 billion nine-storey secretariat in Yenagoa within 24 months, dismissing concerns about potential abandonment.” Diri made this assurance during the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, officiated by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dame Didi Walson-Jack, who praised the project as a significant legacy of the Diri administration.

Walson-Jack lauded the initiative as a milestone for the civil service, describing the secretariat as a symbol of the government’s commitment to enhancing governance through improved infrastructure. She noted that the project aligns with the broader vision of empowering the Nigerian civil service to deliver effective and people-centric governance, emphasizing the need for a motivated and efficient workforce.

In his address, Diri disclosed that 30 per cent of the project’s cost had been paid to contractors, with an additional 20 per cent to be released once work begins. He assured that funding would not impede progress, urging civil servants to support the government’s efforts by enhancing productivity. “The motivation behind this project was the repeated requests for office accommodation by civil servants during Workers’ Day celebrations. With this development, such complaints will soon be a thing of the past,” Diri stated.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Moses Teibowei, highlighted the secretariat’s eco-friendly design, featuring green solutions, solar power backup, conference halls, and a crèche. The structure will cover a footprint of 3,675.633 square metres with a gross area of 26,762.99 square metres and parking for 155 cars. Mr Carlos Zanone, Operations Director of Megastar Technical and Construction Company Ltd, assured that the facility would be built to modern standards, equipped with a solar power-backed system, and delivered within the stipulated 24-month timeframe. The State Head of Service, Mrs. Biobelemoye Charles-Onyema, expressed gratitude to Governor Diri, describing the project as a long-awaited dream for the state’s civil servants.
