The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has been urged to transition from transactional to transformational approaches in managing crises within the region.
This call was made during a staff retreat for the Department of Dispute and Conflict Resolution (DCR) in Lagos, themed “Transiting from Transactional to Transformative Dispute Resolution: Practical Approaches to Conflict Management.”
Dr. Naomi Akpan-Ita, Director of Impact for Change and Development (IMPACT), delivered a presentation titled “Crisis Management: Embracing Inclusivity for Effective Shift from Transactional to Transformational Approaches.”
She emphasized that a shift from transactional crisis management—focused on short-term solutions—to a transformational approach would foster trust, inclusivity, and long-term peace in the Niger Delta.
“The transactional approach often provides quick fixes but fails to address underlying issues, leading to recurring crises,” Akpan-Ita explained. “In contrast, a transformational approach not only halts hostilities but also strengthens relationships, making them better than they were before the conflict began.”
She further called on the NDDC to engage stakeholders throughout the dispute resolution process to foster a sense of belonging and sustainable peace.
Omotayo Awomolo-Enujiugha, Vice President of Marketing and Membership at the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, praised the DCR’s efforts, stating:
“Creating a win-win situation for all parties involved is encouraging. This approach fosters faster, easier, and more lasting peace by ensuring everyone feels engaged.”
Acting Director of the Conflict and Dispute Resolution Department, Goddy A. Ogedegbe, highlighted the transformative strategy introduced by the NDDC’s MD/CEO, Chief Samuel Ogbuku.
“The transformative approach under our MD/CEO focuses on initiating and executing legacy projects that meet the needs of various stakeholders without marginalization,” Ogedegbe said.
He credited the approach with significantly reducing conflict and violent protests in the Niger Delta, creating noticeable peace and progress in the region.
The retreat reinforced the importance of adopting inclusive and transformational conflict management strategies to achieve lasting peace and development in the Niger Delta.
