A critical court case began in London on Thursday morning, pitting the Bodo community in Nigeria against Renaissance Africa Energy, which in a $2.4 billion deal recently acquired most of Shell's onshore oil and gas assets in the West African energy powerhouse.
If the court finds in favour of the community, the Renaissance Africa consortium — consisting of four Nigerian oil companies and an oil trader — could potentially be liable to pay for a full clean-up of oil spills that happened in the Bodo area 17 years ago, an operation that could cost about £500 million ($663 million).
The case — which is being argued in the High Court in London until 13 May — is said to be the Bodo community's last chance to prevent the impact of legacy spills from damaging their way of life for generations to come.
