An indigenous oil firm, Green Energy International Limited, plans stable power for Rivers communities

PUNCH

An indigenous oil firm, Green Energy International Limited, has said its host communities in Rivers State will soon begin to enjoy steady power supply.

The Chairman of GEIL, Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe, disclosed this on Thursday in Port Harcourt during a stakeholders’ workshop on corporate social responsibility and sustainability organised by Akassa Associates.

Adegbulugbe said the plan by the firm to give its host communities 24-hour power supply was part of its gas to power project, adding that the proposed improved electricity supply to the communities will be similar to the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas experience in Bonny Island.

He identified the host communities to benefit from such corporate social responsibility as Ikuru town, Agama Ekede, Ayama Ekede, Asuk Oye and Asukama.

“Since oil production, for us, is not an end in itself, but a means to achieve other development goals, we have moved swiftly towards the implementation of our Gas to Power project anchored on the recent award by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission of a 40MW electricity generation licence.

“The award of this licence is an acknowledgement of GEIL’s commitment to the Federal Government to utilise the gas produced from the field for power and domestic gas projects that would be undertaken during the second phase of the field development.

“I am glad that this workshop and planned visit to the communities will look closely on a befitting model for supporting our target communities with uninterrupted electricity similar to the NLNG experience in Bonny Island,” Adegbulugbe said.

The chairman, who was represented at the event by the GEIL’s Manager, Sustainable Development, Mr Ayo Olojede, stated that the firm was supporting its host communities in the area of employment, scholarships, health, among other development efforts.
