Group urges South South lawmakers to disown water resources bill

THE GUARDIAN

A group, Movement for the Survival of Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND), has implored lawmakers from the South South geopolitical zone to scuttle passage of the contentious Water Resources Bill 2020.

The civil society organisation (CSO) threatened action should they fail, “because it would amount to the enslavement, deprivation and ceding of lands, waters and life of the Niger Delta people to northern hegemony.”

Its national president, Kennedy T. West and national secretary, Winston Amain, in a letter to members of the National Assembly from the zone, said similar “obnoxious laws” had deprived the region of its wealth.

MOSIEND stated: “At this juncture, let us point it out clearly without any fear of contradiction that the Niger Delta people made up of about 40 ethnic nationalities have their land as their heritage and their pride, and will resist the passage of this bill by any means necessary.”
