Shell no longer wanted in Ogoniland, MOSOP declares

THE GUARDIAN

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) yesterday declared that Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) was no longer wanted in the oil-rich community.

In a statement yesterday, MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, described the Dutch oil major as a “killer”, accusing the company of “sponsoring terrorism and so can no longer be tolerated by the Ogoni kingdom.”

He alleged: “ As far as our people are concerned, Shell has caused the death of thousands, and the firm has succeeded in destroying the area and the future of the Ogoni nation.”

On the recent court judgment compelling the Federal Government to renew the licence of the multinational in Ogoniland, Nsuke said their concerns border on “violations against the people and they must should be addressed.”

Nsuke maintained that his people would not accept Shell whether its licence was renewed or not, urging government to appeal the ruling and engage the indigenes robustly.

“The judgment is not important to the Ogoni. What is important to the people is their rights and respect for their dignity.”

The MOSOP leader vowed that they would deploy every means to stop the oil firm from resuming exploratory activities in their community.
