FG committed to peace in Niger Delta – Dikio

THE Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Col. Milland Dikio, on Monday restated Federal Government’s commitment to the sustenance of peace in the Niger Delta region.

Dikio, who was on a tour of the oil rich region, emphasised the importance of traditional institution to peace building and mitigation of violence within the area.

Speaking during his visit to the Pere of Gbaramatu, His Royal Majesty Ogboro Gbaraun II (Aketekpe), the PAP boss expressed the Federal Government’s readiness to partner with the traditional institution to ensure that peace continued to reign in the region.

Dikio was in the company of the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and top officials of the PAP during the visit.

“My visit today to your kingdom is in continuation of my tour to the region. I am here today to underscore the importance of the traditional institution to peace building and the mitigation of conflicts.

“We want to partner with the traditional institution to ensure the sustenance of peace in our region,” he said.

Responding, the Pere of Gbaranmatu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaraun II, praided Dikio for the visit, even as he assured him of the support of his kingdom to PAP to deliver on its mandate of securing peace and development within the kingdom.

The monarch, however, sought the support of the PAP’s helmsman to help improve the lot of the people of Gbaranmatu Kingdom through the provision of skill acquisition, employment and any other opportunities.

The monarch lamented that his kingdom had suffered terribly over the years from what he described as failed and empty promises from the Federal Government.

He stressed that the unfulfilled promises had made Gbaramatu to become synonymous with crises arising from youth restiveness.

The monarch implored Dikio, who he described as a son of Niger Delta with a reputation for integrity, to ensure that the PAP was able to achieve its mandate in the region.

Meanwhile, at the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, on Tuesday, the PAP Interim Administrator, said the institution could be used to train beneficiaries of the Programme.
