Mob beats two robbers to death in Bayelsa

An angry mob in Biogbolo, a suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Monday beat two armed robbery suspects to death after a failed robbery attempt.

While one of the suspects escaped, the fourth member of the gang was seriously injured before the police rescued him from the mob.

The incident was said to have caused heavy traffic along the popular Mbiama Yenagoa Road until men of the state police command intervened.

The four suspects were said to be notorious criminals who terrorised and robbed residents around the Otiotio/Erepa business district, majorly populated by Hausa traders.

“We suffered a lot from those guys; they robbed us and went free. The police were not doing anything about them; they moved freely with firearms in the state,” a resident said.

Another witness said, “At least we will be free for some time now; this is the first and we will continue with this kind of action since the government and police have refused to come to our rescue.

“Jungle justice will persist so that they will reduce in number; they rob people and cross to the other side of the community every day. We are on red alert now.”

The Bayelsa State Police Command said remains of the two suspected armed robbers killed by the mob had been recovered and deposited in a morgue.

The police spokesperson, DSP Asimin Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said two locally-made pistols were recovered from the scene, adding that the deceased had yet to be identified.
