Rape cases rising in Delta, Bozimo laments.

The Guardian.

Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Isaiah Bozimo, has raised the alarm over increasing rape cases in the state.

Although Bozimo did not specify the number of rape cases, he said those committing the act are on the increase on daily basis.

The Attorney General made the disclosure, yesterday, in his office in Asaba at a media parley with the Indigenous Correspondent Chapel (ICC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State council.

He said most worrisome was that parents of rape victims were applying for withdrawal of such cases, instead of assisting government to tackle the crime by providing necessary information for the prosecution of suspects

He wondered how the crime could be nipped in the bud if parents of victims would not assist prosecuting authority. Bozimo disclosed that he would continue to pursue rape cases and other criminal matters provided there are strong evidences to that effect, despite foot-dragging by parents of victims.

He said government was poised to improve the criminal justice system with a view to speeding up the administration of criminal justice laws in the state.

Bozimo also hinted that the Ministry of Justice would soon embark on training and re-training of employees to ensure that workers were not only motivated but also equipped with relevant laws, essentially for the review of the administration of criminal Justice laws in the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of ICC, Andrew Emephia, said the parley became necessary not only to seek answers to some pertinent and nagging questions but also to seek partnership with the ministry.
