National Coordinator of NDFC, Ofonime Akpanikon, stated yesterday that the IMC-monitored forensic audit had allegedly been designed to cover up the tracks of their cronies who awarded contracts worth billions of naira in questionable circumstances.
Akpanikon explained that critics of the Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei-led IMC and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, had never been opposed to the forensic audit, that they had remained resolute in their opposition to the illegal imposition of the IMC, their fraudulent operations in NDDC and distortion of the audit.
He described the IMC as illegal with no place in the NDDC Act.
“We cringe to believe that the Buhari administration and its famed anti-corruption toga will fall to the manipulation of the minister into allowing that illegality to become the new normal in the agency in utter disregard of the NDDC Act, where he is directing the payment of billions of naira for fake, unverified and unapproved contracts.
We call on Buhari to disband Akpabio’s illegal IMC, inaugurate aboard for the NDDC and appoint an unbiased international firm of auditors to independently audit the books of the NDDC,” he stated.
But the NDDC head of corporate affairs, Charles Odili, said the NDFC’s call for the disbandment of the IMC was diversionary, as it lacked the locus to determine what happens in the commission.
“Let peace reign in this region. Let us leave this IMC to work. Each time any committee is set up, people come up to fight. Is this how Niger Delta could be developed?” he said.
